How to Determine Your Ideal Keyboard Size
To ensure your custom keyboard fits your hands perfectly, we provide a simple and precise method for measurement.
1. Download the Measurement Tool
- You can find the STEP and STL files on the main page under downloads. Both formats contain the same object, so you can choose either one based on your 3D printing preferences.
2. 3D Print the Tool Locally
- You can print the tool using any standard 3D printer, and even the cheapest print will work fine.
- FDM printing in PLA is usually the most affordable option.
- If you don’t own a 3D printer, you can use online 3D printing services such as Hubs, Shapeways, or local print shops.
3. Measure Your Hand Fit
- Set up the tool correctly:
- Place the printed block on a table or a piano at a normal keyboard height.
- Sit at a standard piano bench or chair to match the playing position.
- Finger spacing:
- Place your fingers between the spaces in the printed tool.
- Identify the narrowest space where you can still move your fingers freely in and out in a way in which you won't lift the block from the table when lifting your finger.
- Black key (sharp key) width:
- Check which narrowest black keytop width (the top surface of the sharp keys) you find acceptable.
- Consider jumps and overall playability when making this choice.
Understanding the Fit: Keytop Width vs. Finger Size
- If you have thicker fingers, you will generally need more space between keys but can often play comfortably with narrow black keytops.
- If you have very thin fingers, you will generally require broader black keytops, not just for comfort but because hitting very thin tops accurately—especially in jumps—becomes difficult.
4. Get Your Measurement Code
- The tool gives you a combination of a letter and a number (e.g., "3F").
- This code represents your optimal keyboard size.
- You can use this code to order your instrument.
5. Ordering a Traditional Keyboard
- If you prefer the standard piano layout, select "Traditional" when ordering.
- In that case, measurement is not necessary, and it doesn’t matter what values you enter in the measurement fields—if one field says "Traditional," we will make the standard size.
